Work starts on MVRDV’s Amsterdam Valley

7 September 2017

Construction has begun on Valley, a 75,000 sq m, green-terraced, mixed-use building located in Amsterdam’s central business district.

Dutch architect MVRDV’s design for OVG Real Estate was selected by the Municipality of Amsterdam in 2015 and will include 196 apartments, seven storeys of office space, underground parking, a sky bar and retail and cultural facilities.

The project has a reflective exterior facade and a series of rugged, stone terraces with large planters, which cover the building in vegetation.

Valley contains three peaks of varied height, that reach up to a maximum of 100m for the Sky bar, which will offer panoramic views over Amsterdam.

Landscape architect Piet Oudolf designed all of Valley’s vegetation, with the aim of achieving a year-round green appearance.

The development sits on the border between residential and commercial functions and will connect green sports fields and the dense urban setting of the business district.

Publicly accessible from ground floor, through two large stairs, is the Grotto, a large interior space fully clad in natural stone and lit by two ponds that also act as skylights.

This is intended to serve as a living room for the residents of Valley as well as a grand foyer for all other activities in the building.

Completion is set for summer 2021.
