Drones: when does monitoring become spying?

  1. Interesting article but don’t forget that if you are intending to use a drone (UAV) for commercial reasons or financial reward you need to register with the CAA and satisfy the requirements of the Air Navigation Order BEFORE using the equipment. Failure to comply could see the operator having their equipment seized and Court action that could result in a heavy fine, imprisonment or both.

  2. In order to commercially operate a UAV the pilot and craft must be approved by the CAA and have gone through a practical and theoretical test, and an operations manual, which will detail all the dos and don’ts of operating with minimum distances etc to other objects and third parties.

  3. Whilst the practice notes and guides are great in that they detail the standard permission operating parameters, bear in mind a few specialist operators who have proved exceptional H&S have special exemptions – e.g. We are able to fly at night and to significantly reduced separation distances.

  4. The regulations are in place and arduous. I don’t think this is a real world worry but may be one of perceptions
