  1. Whilst not having a good view of your cost position is a problem, is it really a major driver of the issues our industry suffers from?

I think much more fundamental is the way the project team is contracted in the first place. The non-collaborative contracts used by most project make the job of trying to control cost so much harder, due to the misaligned incentives across the team.

The risk with project control systems (for both cost and time) is that if they are designed around today’s common processes used on projects today, they might make changing away from them even harder. “We would love to, but we’ve just started using this new system, and it doesn’t work like that”.

Misaligned incentives due to inappropriate use of fixed price and reimbursable contracts, are at the root of many industry problems. Automating and improving the workflow of the process of contractual variations, changes, early warnings, and claims, is not going to help us get out of the mire. It might make the mire a bit less unpleasant.

It would be great to see the companies like Aconex in this market to lead the way and to embed the functionality to work with project alliances and CCPM. That would be a really great contribution!

PS – apologies to any that have this. I haven’t researched in depth, but I have looked through many of their websites.
