CIOB CEO joins big hitters on CLC advisors group

Caroline Gumble

Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) chief executive Caroline Gumble has joined a group of senior advisors to the Construction Leadership Council (CLC), as part of a restructure of the organisation.

The refreshed structure of the CLC, announced by CLC co-chair Andy Mitchell last week, builds on the creation in March this year of the CLC Task Force in response to the covid-19 pandemic.

The new structure places the Task Force at the heart of a drive to transform the construction industry, as set out in the CLC Industry Recovery Plan.

Originally meeting daily, and now twice each week, the Task Force is about to mark its 100th meeting since March.

To support the Task Force, a CLC Senior Advisors Group has been established, along the lines of non-executives of a typical board. This group, of which Gumble is a part alongside the likes of Ray O’Rourke and Mark Farmer, will provide representation of different parts of the industry, together with support, challenge and guidance.

The CLC said it expected the new structure to remain in place during 2021, before being reviewed next year.

The members of the CLC Senior Advisors Group are:

  • Mike Chaldecott – CEO, Saint-Gobain UK & Ireland
  • Amanda Clack – head of strategic advisory, CBRE
  • Gregor Craig – CEO, Skanska UK
  • Caroline Gumble – CEO, Chartered Institute of Building
  • Amanda Long – CEO, Considerate Constructors Scheme

  • Anna Scothern – CEO, National Home Improvement Council
  • Rachel Skinner – president, Institution of Civil Engineers
  • Andrew Clark – director of programmes, Royal Academy of Engineering
  • Sam Stacey – challenge director, Transforming Construction, UKRI
  • David Thomas – CEO, Barratt Developments
  • Ray O’Rourke – CEO, Laing O’Rourke
  • Gail Cartmail – president, TUC
  • Lynn Way – president, National Access and Scaffolding Confederation
  • Jennifer Whyte – professor, Imperial College
  • Mark Farmer – CEO, Cast
  • Peter Reekie – CEO, Scottish Futures Trust
  • Mark Spence – MD, Construction Employers Federation, Northern Ireland.

  1. Another ‘talking shop’? What does the Construction Leadership Council (CLC) do, let alone a senior advisor to the Construction Leadership Council?

How, for instance might this have helped poor Jonathan Roper re Grenfell- parallel CM report refers (https://constructionmanagement.co.uk/grenfell-celotex-growth-drive-led-to-sale-of-pir-insulation-above-18m/) – who I dare say had little knowledge, or interest in CLC or CIOB?

Looking forward to the day when all are required to be suitably qualified, eg CIOB and not just trusting to a ‘red tapeless’ free for all ‘light touch’, Covid or not. Time for a reset.
