I agree totally with this article and in my opinion the answer lies in establishing the old technical colleges which provided sandwhich courses which allowed the development of academic knowledge alongside practical on-site training. These colleges also had good relationships with various employers and could place students with them.

  3. Colleges and universities will always offer these types of courses as they get paid to do so. What they need to do is get the course accredited by either the CIOB, RICS or other professional organisations. If it’s not accredited it does not run. Construction apprenticeships also need to run till advanced level, having an apprenticeship only to level 2 is absurd. Getting school leavers into trades isn’t going to work when your working from famine to feast through employment agencies as there is nothing else out there. Any school leaver I would advise to stay well away from construction trades until they sort the employment prospects out by getting the big 6 to have trades on the books. Shortage of trades in construction you’re having a laugh. Head north and wake up.
