  1. Having read the transcripts of the inquiry to date, it is appalling that some of the individuals concerned, knew little, if anything about the nature of a building such as Lakanal House. There was another fire in 1997, some ten years before the refurbishment was carried out, this fire, which was just as intense as the source fire of 2009, yet the compartment was not breached on that occasion.

  2. As a Schmidlin executive in the 1980’s I spent a great deal of effort in assisting with the design of fireproof, structurally stable spandrel panels to satisfy the District Surveyors and Building Control officers. This event confirms to me dire state of technical and contractual training in our industry and the Local Authorities. Yes I’m glad to be called “OLD SCHOOL”

  3. It seems not one person had overall control or understanding of this refurbishment and the implications of changes.

  4. Unfortunately I fear there will be many more cases like this where the direction from the top … is patchy at best. People acting the part rather than being the part.
