  1. Firstly, no mention has been made of shading. We often find that shading strategies are first to be cut to save budget, when they are integral in avoiding too much solar gain in summer (high sun) whilst allowing adequate solar gain in winter (low sun). Secondly, glazed roofs and skylights should only be used in specific circumstances for he same reason. Thirdly, it is not always the case that timber construction has negligible thermal mass. Our ladder-frame timber walls have 34 cm of recycled newspaper insulation, giving the house more than adequate thermal mass. The relationship between components that have some thermal mass and the positioning of the insulation is critical – as with all construction, the technical details need to be considered as part of a wholistic solution and broad-brush conclusions avoided.
